The MuseOsteria [lit. Inn-Museum], born thanks to the patient and tireless work begun over thirty years ago by Marcello Manti, is the fruit of researching, collecting, studying and re-arranging materials, as well as of restoration work and a passion that has accompanied him since he embarked on this “dream- come-true” of his.

The MuseOsteria is the result of the amazing commitment of the Cardeto, Vallata del Sant’Agata and the Graecanic Area of Aspromonte to the district’s own cultural development.

The premises of the museum are in Cardeto, in the ancient “da Cruci” quarter, in a farmhouse to which a winery is annexed. Assessed by the Calabrian Regional Authority, the Museum provides a social and religious agro/pastoral cross section of Cardeto’s Greek Community. Marcello, the museum’s agreeable, affable guide, describes the farming implements on show in the museum which he himself conceived and created. The museum, opened originally as a meeting place, has become a dynamic model for other undertakings that seek to promote and share experiences capable of enhancing activities historically present in the entire area. The MuseOsteria not only fosters the historical memory of the recent Graecanic past, but also acts as a crucible for the promotion of social and artistic itineraries within the entire Calabrian-Greek district requiring a synergetic effort involving tourism, culture and the environment.

The museum is a cross section of the history and culture of the people of Cardeto. Alongside numerous everyday objects associated with the agro/pastoral and craft tradition, there are also a number of showcases dedicated to emigration, to political and religious associations as well as other exhibits which present some of the most significant aspects of the life and people of Cardeto. The criterion adopted to exhibit the items, intended arousing awareness of the function of each of the objects on show and the context to which they were used.

These small premises, full of exhibits, also provide visitors which an opportunity to take a journey of discovery into the daily life of a not-too-distant past and which, to some extent, is still alive in present-day Greek Calabria.
