The ruins of the Church of San Giovanni
Descrizione
The twelfth-century church of San Giovanni, now a ruin, has a single nave with a sole protruding apse and two doorways: one facing west, the other, as is the tradition, south. The church is larger than usual, 18 metres long and a little under 8 metres wide, with a length-breadth ratio greater than 1:2. The wall, composed of smooth mica schist and gneiss slabs of various sizes, almost totally devoid of ceramic fillings, gives the impression of a “homogeneously” grey surface.

Meno di 30 km di S.S. 106 conducono da Reggio Calabria sino al bivio dove lasciare la litoranea e seguire le indicazioni per Fossato Ionico. 10 km con qualche curva ma vedute spettacolari su Pentedattilo conducono a Montebello Ionico. Proseguire verso monte ed in 5 km si giunge a Fossato.
Percorrendo la strada provinciale (S.P. 22) alle ultime case di Fossato porre attenzione ad un tornante sinistrorso dal quale si stacca a destra una stradina (via Sant’Anna) che scende alla fiumara San Pietro.
